Meriter Nurses Council Seeks Nominations

– Election season is upon us for Meriter Nurses Council! “If you value patient safety and fairness in the workplace, you should run for Nurses Council,” says Mary Malaney, RN and Council Member.

Our Nurses Council is the nurses, your co-workers and the leadership of our Union at Meriter Hospital. We handle the issues that come up with management, educate members, and coordinate union activities.

“Having always worked in the NICU, Nurses’ Council put me in touch with the rest of the house.  It helped me see things from a different perspective and made me feel more a part of the whole.  Many on NC are active not only in our union, but also serve on unit and/or hospital-wide committees.  They are real “go-to” people.  And meeting with HR and different members of administration each month has been enlightening as well as informative.  This is a great place to start if you have interest in being involved in improving our work environment and in turn, improving things for our patients.  I wish I would have gotten involved a long time ago,” says Sherryl Abplanalp, RN and Council Member.

We meet the third Wednesday of every month for one and ½ hours. We also meet with the Nursing Directors on the same day. Meeting time with the Directors is paid time. Meeting times alternate between 11:30am – 3pm and 3:30pm – 7pm so that members from different shifts can attend. Co-chair members also attend a meeting with HR called Good Relations once a month and automatically will serve on our bargaining team for contract negotiations in 2017. Together Co-chairs and Council members organize and run our membership meetings. Each unit is allowed their own representative, with a total of 22 Council seats. Term limits are for either one or two years. Elections will be held October 27, 2015.

“By being on Nurses Council you will learn about the benefits and protections our contract provides. More importantly, you will have the support of and opportunity to learn from other Nurses Council members and our union Staff Representative,” says Mary Malaney, RN and Council Member.
